A Production Manager Forestry is in charge of planning, coordinating and supervising forestry activities to enable efficient, sustainable and safe production of timber and other resources. They work in commercial forestry enterprises, plantations or forest product organisations managing the whole production process of planting and cultivating to harvest and process the product. They compromise between productivity and environmental responsibility and regulation. Production Managers come up with operational plans that involve the production goals, environmental policies and safety standards. They plan the activities, including site preparation, planting, thinning, harvesting and transportation and make sure they utilize the labour, machinery and materials to maximum use. One of the most important responsibilities is monitoring productivity, quality and costs, as managers have to be efficient, reducing waste and impact on the environment.

One of the major issues of the position is the oversight of forestry employees, contractors and machinery operators. The Production Managers act as leaders, do performance appraisals, and enforce safety culture and best practices with the workers. They also manage equipment and infrastructure services to minimise time lost, and they facilitate a smooth operation. Production Managers (Forestry) are in association with environmental experts, land managers and regulatory authorities with the objective of ensuring that forestry laws, sustainability and environmental management plans are adhered to. They observe the condition of forests, mitigate biosecurity threats and take steps towards conserving soil, water and biodiversity.

There must be proper record keeping and reporting, such as the monitoring of volumes of production, costs and operational performances. Managers use data to define opportunities for improvement, implementing new technologies and efficient production procedures. Success in this job requires strong leadership, organisational abilities and a good understanding of forestry operations. It is also important in making informed decisions during changes in climatic and market circumstances. Production Managers (Forestry) are crucial in presenting sustainable production of the forest. With proper planning, team leadership and management of the environment, they help to manage long-term resources, business performance and the responsible use of the forest assets.
