A liaison officer is responsible for helping to build communication between two organisations by communicating with other companies on behalf of their organisation and with employees on behalf of the management. They make it easy to the communication process and schedule meetings when different agencies need to work together. Liaison officers can work in private as well as in government organisations. Their specialised niches are military, law enforcement and education and in companies to communicate information to the media, press and the public.

The position of a liaison officer can be versatile. They help in sharing information during major affairs and emergencies. They are capable of showing the right brand image of the organisation in front of the media or the public. They serve multiple duties together, such as handling communication and coordination, simplifying operations and acting as a mediator.

The Liaison Officer plays both roles, as an external role, contacting out and relating to others and as an internal role relating to and reporting back to different sections of the employer organisation. A business liaison role is primarily to interact with other associations to service the business interests of the organisation to promote the long-term success of the business. This differs from a Business Development role that has the primary purpose of coordinating sales and marketing activities.

A Customer Service role that is only needed to give support and guidance to the business’s customers would not be considered as highly relevant to a Business Liaison Officer or at the required skill level. A liaison officer in the community and welfare sector can work directly with individuals to determine their problems or needs and take action to reduce service delivery to them on one hand and provide feedback to the employer organisation about how its services and service delivery might be improved on the other.

In Australia and New Zealand:

Most occupations in this unit group have a level of skill commensurate with a bachelor degree or higher qualification. At least five years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualification. In some examples relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification ANZSCO Skill Level 1. Registration or licensing may be required.

Tasks Include:

Establishing and facilitating communication between different community groups, organizations and governments;

Providing leadership for special events aimed at promoting awareness and strengthening relations;
Researching and preparing reports, briefing notes, memoranda, correspondence and other documents to help facilitate communication;
Maintaining confidential files and documents;
Attending meetings and maintaining records.
