An insurance investigator is a person who works on investigations into insurance claims to ensure their validity. For this occupation, you need to register or obtain a license. An insurance investigator works to find out if the claim is valid or not, detects fraud, collects information from adjusters, enforcement, claimant and witnesses to ensure the validity of the claim. Claims under investigation include suspected criminal activity such as arson, unnecessary medical treatments and staged accidents.
The insurance investigator's work starts by collecting and reviewing related documents. Take an interview with the victim and witnesses for a statement. To determine if the injury reported is legitimate, they may also study the claimant through surveillance and social media tracking to see if they do anything that would suggest that they don't have an injury. Once the investigation is done, the insurance investigator makes a report of their results and sends it to legal professionals. Based on the case, there might be chances that an insurance investigator will be called to testify about their findings in court. Insurance investigators are either hired by a private consulting firm, company or agency. Some insurance companies hire their own in-house investigation teams, while other companies subcontract the work to private investigators or private investigation companies.
