Director of Photography

Director of Photography is one of the most senior creative professionals responsible for conceiving and delivering the visual style of a film, TV or web series project, commercial or digital production. They operate as the director’s visual associate, DOP picks up the mood from the script, and the creative vision turns it into imagery for storytelling and the emotional impact of the film. Before shooting, the DOP comes up with the visuals of the project. For them this means, using the right camera for the job, picking out lenses, lighting styles, colours and even when to put the camera to best tell the story. Such tasks include studying the scripts, working on storyboards, writing shot lists and visiting the location to find the perfect visual approach. Their works serve to capture each scene not only with the right artistic style but also with the right consistency.

Whilst filming, the DOP is in charge of the camera crew, the lighting team and the grip department. They are responsible for the placement of the camera, and the choices in use of perspective, exposure and movement and in that they strive to get each frame calling on the director’s desires. Operations like this are carried out under the guidance and instructions from the DOP to gaffers, focus pullers, camera operators and lightning technicians, and it is the DOP that makes the precision safe and smooth execution possible and at the same time keeps on finding solutions to the technical problems. At the same time, they also keep an eye on the quality of the image throughout the shooting, solve technical issues and ensure that all the visual teams are coordinating smoothly and efficiently.

After filming, the DOP is the one who oversees the colour grading process for not only keeping the look of the film the same, but also for the final polish of the project. Also, working in tandem with the colourists, they mix contrast, saturations, shadows and highlights so that the end product is the representation of the planned aesthetic. An artistic director of photography combines the visionary and technological aspects of cinematography, lighting and camera hardware. Their leadership communication skills and creative problem solving abilities are equally important. Their work is at the core of establishing the visual identity and total cinematic experience of a production.
