A court bailiff or sheriff is a position that works for the justice system. A court bailiff is a law enforcement officer who handles operations in the courtroom. They have an important role in keeping everyone in the courtroom safe. They can work at the state, local, or federal level, including magistrate courts, to ensure order in the courtroom and provide security for judges, juries, plaintiffs, and defendants. All courts have at least one position of bailiff, and more can be hired if trials are more important.

Sheriffs run and implement court orders, warrants, and writs, participate in the takeover and sale of property, and perform court and other related duties. Bailiffs serve legal orders and documents, seize or reclaim properties, evict tenants, and perform other related activities. Sheriffs and bailiffs are usually required to complete a provincially provided training program to work in provincial courts. They are employed in federal, provincial, territorial, and municipal courts, and bailiffs may be employed as court officers or in private service as agents for creditors.

Other bailiff positions may include marshals who protect people, including judges and other staff, at the Supreme Court. They make sure that all employees in the building are safe and they work closely with state, local and federal authorities when necessary. A court security officer checks the courtroom and removes troublesome individuals when necessary. They also deal with threats outside the courtroom and collaborate with other law enforcement officers. A court officer follows laws and rules inside the courtroom and communicates with judges and other officials. They keep safe defendants, plaintiffs, and jurors to and from their seats and may assist in the enforcement of court orders related to outstanding payments, such as rent or fines, in civil cases.
