The clerk of the court is a person who manages tasks related to administrative functions in support of judges and magistrates. Their main task includes preparing and issuing court orders like, summons, probation orders, and other official documents. They prepare case summaries and documents. They check the legal documents which are going to be presented to the court. They search files to get information for the court and contact witnesses, attorneys, or litigants. They make staff schedules. They issue oaths to jurors, interpreters, witnesses, or defendants and also instruct parties about court appearance times.
A clerk of the court also takes care of court finances. Their duty is to collect and settle fines, fees, and bail payments, maintain accurate records and make detailed financial reports. They also read charges being brought to court, ensuring the courtroom is properly prepared for the day's work and giving court orders if needed. The court clerk has a different time schedule. Most of the time they handle calls, but sometimes work as per regular hours. For example, a court clerk who does office duties even when the court is in session. Overtime is also common for them, especially because they often perform after-court duties when court proceedings are adjourned. These responsibilities often require them to work beyond normal hours.
Sometimes, travel can be a necessity for court clerks, especially those with circuit court responsibilities. This circuit court typically consists of a court clerk and reporter, a prosecutor, a defense attorney, and a judge. Depending on their specific responsibilities, they may also be required to travel to satellite court locations by land or air.
