Civil Engineering Technician Job Description, Responsibilities, and Education Requirements

Indicative Skill Level:

Most occupations in this unit group require skill levels consistent with the qualifications and experience outlined below.

In Australia:

AQF Associate Degree, Advanced Diploma, or Diploma ANZSCO Skill Level 2

In New Zealand:

NZ Register Diploma ANZSCO Skill Level 2

At least three years of relevant experience may be required in place of the formal qualifications listed above. In some cases, relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to formal qualifications. Registration or licensing may be required. Qualifications in some engineering fields may be accepted on a case-by-case basis, provided the program includes compulsory mathematics and physics subjects, and there is sufficient proficiency in structures, materials testing, etc.

  • Collecting and analysing data, and carrying out computations.
  • Estimating material costs and ensuring finished works are within specifications, regulations and contract provisions.
  • Inspecting civil engineering works, and organising and supervising maintenance and repair work.
  • Conducting field and laboratory tests of construction materials and soils, and collecting data for traffic surveys.
  • Testing and evaluating construction materials.
  • Outlining work programs and reviewing these for accuracy, adequacy and feasibility.
  • Setting up technical instruments used to collect data (geotechnical).
  • Drilling and taking soil samples and collecting rock samples (geotechnical).
  • Reviewing aerial photographs (geotechnical).
  • Taking measurements, making calculations and writing detailed notes (geotechnical).
