Sports Umpire ANZSCO Code 452322

A Sports Umpire has the duty of presiding over sporting events in order to make sure that competitions are fair, safe and run as they should according to the laid down rules and regulations. Sports Umpires are fundamental to the integrity of any game level. They compete in most types of sports such as cricket, football, basketball, tennis and hockey, among other structured sports. The main responsibility of a Sports Umpire is to read and apply the rules of the game in the same manner and fairly. Their decision on scoring, fouling, penalties and the behaviour of players are usually made under very high pressure. Umpires are supposed to be very judgmental, confident and have a good command of the rules and competition specifications of the particular sport.
Sports Umpires check playing fields, equipment and facilities and make sure that they are safe and in compliance before matches. They also informed players and officials what to expect in matches. Umpires are also informed in overseeing the play, resolving conflicts and issuing punitive measures where applicable when there is disorder and unfairness in the game. Communication skills are of utmost importance since the umpires need to be able to communicate decisively and clarify rulings to players, coaches and other officials. Physical fitness, stamina and concentration are also required as the job frequently involves constant movement and duration of attention during the matches.
Following events, Sports umpires can fill in match reports and record incidents or injuries and give feedback to sporting bodies or competition organisers. The training, assessment and accreditation should be done regularly to keep up with the changes in the rules and the standard of officiating. On balance, a Sports Umpire is an important person involved in fair play and sportsmanship. They help to make the sporting competitions credible, safe and entertaining through professionalism, unbiased decision making and good enforcement of rules.
